“A church with an awareness of the past,
Meeting the needs of the present,
With an astute readiness to meet the
Challenges of the Future.”
Church Historian
OUR HISTORY
"In the year of our Lord 1877, the founding fathers of this great church were the offspring of slaves whose religious services had been held under the brush arbor in the woods under the cover of darkness."
In the times of the Old Testament, Canaan was often referred to as the "Promised Land". And, in the Reconstruction period, when blacks acquired assets, particularly land, they referred to their new possessions as Canaan or the Promised Land. Based on this note, it is mere conjecture of the writer, that when the land was acquired, it was such an awesome, long awaited experience that the word sweet was used to describe joy and enthusiasm. This gave rise to the name Sweet Canaan.
